Boamah was speaking at the opening session of the two-day Reaching the Unreached: Mobile Money Uptake in Ghana conference on mobile money at the Ghana Technology University College in Accra, on Tuesday.
Ghana Business News reported Boamah saying the near 100 per cent mobile penetration of more than 25 million “is a clear indication that Ghana is a fertile ground for the promotion of mobile money activities”.
He said there are currently 5.4 million subscribers to mobile money on the three mobile network operators that facilitate it, with daily transactions amounting to around GHC16.5 million (US$8.5 million).
Boamah said the Ministry of Communications was making policies to cover the development of reliable and cost effective information communication infrastructure a priority.
He added: “Thus e-government network already in existence is an attempt to extend the national backbone infrastructure to all districts, and will ultimately connect all public institutions and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to a single shared communications and computing infrastructure.”
