Ghana to train 30,000 plus youths in ICT

Over 30,000 more youths in Ghana are set to benefit from a government-funded ICT training scheme dubbed Ghana’s National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), according to deputy minister for youths and sports Dr. Edward Omane-Boamah.

Dr. Omane-Boamah expressed the government’s commitment to expanding the programme while speaking at the graduation ceremony of some 700 youths in ICT in Koforidua, Volta Region.

Beneficiaries of the programme acquire skills in the assembly and repair of phones and laptops, computer hardware and computer software, and entrepreneurship. The goal of the NYEP initiative is to empower Ghana’s youths and arm them with the required tools needed to attain leadership positions in their chosen fields of study.

To ensure that sufficient machineries, equipments and resources are made available, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the RLG Communication Company, which has provided the NYEP with all the resources that are required for the recruitment and training of the 30,000 youths.

Concerning the criteria for selection, the deputy minister emphasised that every Ghanaian youth will be considered.

“This is imperative to correct the notion that only party youths will benefit from the NYEP,” he said.

While commenting on the progress of the NYEP, the programme’s national coordinator, Abuga Pele, said efforts at tackling the programme’s numerous challenges are yielding positive results which are evident in its smooth running nationwide.

“While we’ve been able to achieve a lot in the programme, we are still awaiting the establishing law. We anticipate the passage of a bill from Parliament to fully establish the programme,” he added.
