Technology truck, nicknamed ‘The Hulk’, to patrol Cape Town roads to tackle traffic offenders

A mobile traffic centre, featuring an IBM server, five computers, televisions, speakers and air conditioning, is on the hunt for road abusers.

The 26-wheeler ‘Hulk’, worth around R2 million (US$231,213), has been donated to the City of Cape Town by a technology firm and kitted out so it can facilitate roadblocks for catching drink drivers, carry out ‘special operations’ and be used for public relations campaigns.

The technology hub will also be linked to the Electronic National Traffic Information System (e-Natis) so traffic officers can check the details of motor vehicles, driving licences and name and address of the registered owner.

Alderman J P Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, said: “The Hulk will travel the Cape metropolitan area and will be used at major events.”

‘The Hulk’ also has a chair lift for disabled access.
