New RLabs centre in Somaliland

A new Reconstructed Living Lab (RLabs) Technology and Incubation Centre was opened in Somaliland’s Borama City yesterday (Thursday) to benefit an estimated 6,000 people in the community.

The first Technology and Incubation City was just launched by RLabs’ Hhasan Giire, the Founder of Extended Bits and Somaliland champion.

“I am very positive about the future of my country. Unlike Somalia, there are people working to develop themselves. Since 1991, 26 universities and 50 secondary schools set up, there shall be invested in infrastructure, roads, electricity, hospitals, and so on. But it is essential that young people come into contact with peers around the world,” Giire told 1% Club.

A skills development program will start soon with the aim to empower women and equip them in Information and Computing Technology (ICT).

Giire is a well-known entrepreneur in the Somaliland region. In an interview with 1% Club, Giire said the centre aims to provide web access for students who can use the potential of social media so they can learn from others’ experiences and share ideas.

He also spoke of the high cost of Internet which prevents access for most community members since they do not earn enough to afford it.

RLabs is a registered social enterprise that supplies innovative solutions for communities. The main hub is located in Athlone, Cape Town. Hubs are linked to international destinations throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and Central Africa.
