Johannesburg one of RIM’s BlackBerry 10 launch locations

Research In Motion (RIM) will launch the long-awaited BlackBerry 10 operating system in Johannesburg on January 30 as it looks to revive its fortunes in 2013.

Launch events are taking place in Dubai, Johannesburg, London, New York City, Paris and Toronto, but mystery surrounds other details. RIM is expected to unveil two new handsets as well.

Despite remaining popular in Africa, RIM has experienced a sharp decline in global market share for BlackBerry and is hoping to reverse the trend with its latest system.

“We look forward to seeing you at the exclusive Blackberry Experience launch event on Wednesday, 30 January. The world is waiting, but you can see it first. Save the date to join us in Johannesburg… for the global unveiling of BlackBerry 10,” the invitation read.

Some large enterprise customers of BlackBerry have already trialled the new operating system, as RIM look to ensure it gets 2013 off to a positive start.

“This is a crucial step for us in getting our large enterprise customers ready to support BlackBerry 10 at the point of launch date, as opposed to post-launch date,” Senior Director for enterprise accounts, Bryan Lee told Reuters.
