Microsoft is claiming sales of its latest console, the Xbox One, surpassed one million when it launched in 13 markets on Friday.

The technology giant said the majority of retailers had now sold out of the console, but it was working to “replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand”.

Microsoft said the launch set a new record for the company and also released accompanying statistics on gamers’ activity once buying the console.

It said more than 60 million zombies have already been killed in Dead Rising 3 and more than 3.6 million miles had been driven in Forza Motorsport 5.

“We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing and strategy at Xbox.

“Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.”

Launch parties were held in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, one week after Sony launched its rival console the PlayStation 4.

No African countries have been included in Microsoft’s initial launch locations.
