BlackBerry wins US patents case

A panel of federal judges has ruled in favour of BlackBerry in a lawsuit accusing the company of infringing three patents belonging to Dutch semiconductor company NXP BV.

Reuters reports the 2012 lawsuit originally covered six patents, but NXP later dropped its claims relating to three of them, alleging BlackBerry – then known as Research In Motion – infringed design and data transmission patents in its smartphones and tablets.

The court however ruled in BlackBerry’s favour, with the jury needing less than one day of deliberations.

In a statement, NXP said: “We are disappointed with the verdict and are investigating all options for appeal.”
