Samsung to pay Apple $120m over patent row

Samsung has been ordered to pay Apple US$119.6 million for infringing three of its patents, according to a report.

Reuters reports after additional deliberation a United States (US) jury has ruled the company must pay the unchanged amount after the case was sent back on a technicality.

One of the jurors, Margarita Palmada, said she had hoped the two companies could resolve the dispute without resorting to litigation.

“It would have been so much simpler for all involved,” she was quoted as saying.

Some jurors indicated they were in favour of awarding Apple more but eventually settled on the initial amount.

The two companies have appeared in court numerous times over patent disputes.

HumanIPO reported last year the South Korean firm had been ordered to pay Apple US$290 million for copyright damages after Apple claimed 26 Samsung devices copied iPhone and iPad technology.

In the latest court case in the long patent row between the two firms, Apple accused Samsung of “systematically” copying features from its devices, though Samsung responded by saying it was a “pioneer” and it was Apple that was guilty of copying.
