Madonsela taken aback by Motsoeneng appointment

South African public protector Thuli Madonsela has said she does not know what to make of the permanent appointment of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chief operating officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

HumanIPO reported today Motsoeneng had been made a fixture at the state broadcaster despite vocal resistance from opposition party the Democratic Alliance (DA).

“We can expect more surveillance and purging of SABC staff, more clampdowns on editorial independence and more “happy news” that reflects positively on the governing party,” said DA shadow minister of communication Gavin Davis.

Earlier this year, Madonsela released information highlighting how Motsoeneng lied about his educational history and gave himself irregular salary increases.

She advised the SABC board begin looking for a replacement to take over within 90 days.

Madonsela she is not in a position to comment on what has happened until she had heard from the SABC, saying she would call the state broadcaster and communications minister Faith Muthambi.
