Kenya’s LTE subscriptions to hit 1m by 2018

Long Term Evolution (LTE) network subscriptions in Kenya will hit one million by 2018, according to a report by Pyramid Research.

There has yet to be an LTE rollout in Kenya from any operator despite much discussion, and no operator has yet been been issued a licence.

“Pyramid Research expects the rollout of LTE to begin in 2015 and the total number of subscriptions to reach 1.2 million by 2018, 2.7 per cent of total mobile subscriptions in Kenya,” read the report.

The report said at the moment the adoption of 3G technologies is 16 per cent of the mobile subscription base.

“We project this will grow as operators continue to expand their networks,” it said.

Kenya plans building an LTE network in 2015, according to the country’s Ministry of ICT, and the government wants to adopt a wholesale model regarding LTE, whereby it partners with investors to build the network and sells capacity on to operators, a move that has been opposed by Kenya’s largest mobile network Safaricom.
