Airtel Nigeria targets 30 million subscribers by December

Airtel Nigeria is targeting 30 million subscribers on the network before the end of the year, an 18 per cent increase in its subscriber base in the last nine months of 2014

Segun Ogunsanya, chief executive officer (CEO) of Airtel Nigeria, said this in an interview with Bloomberg in Lagos.

As at the end of March, Airtel had 25.5 million subscribers in Nigeria, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), thus making Nigeria Airtel’s biggest market outside India.

“I’m very optimistic that there are no encumbrances against growth so I’m sure we’re going to reach the 30 million mark,” said Ogunsanya. “Despite the environment and the issues we face, I think we’re still giving relatively good service to our customers. We’re very bullish about Nigeria.”

Airtel plans to spend about $300 million expanding its network and services in the country this year.

“We have invested so much in marketing research to see what the customers want and we are delivering on those expectations.”
