Zuku announces US$2.5 million network upgrade

Kenyan pay-TV and telecommunications provider Zuku is to embark on a KSh220 million (US$2.5 million) network upgrade, aimed at improving speeds and reducing downtime on the network.

The Wananchi Group’s Zuku said the major network upgrade would commence immediately and work is expected to be complete by the end of October this year.

Once completed, the Zuku network will provide speeds of up to 50 Mbps to its Nairobi customers, with similar speeds already being rolled out in Mombasa.

“Over the last two years we have had an unprecedented growth in our customer numbers, hence the need to provision more capacity in the network to accommodate the growth,” said Richard Alden, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Wananchi Group.

“This upgrade will ensure that we offer improved quality of service, to existing and new customers,” Alden said.

“The upgrade will focus on increasing network access capacity for the end user ; new voice architecture so as to provide cutting edge telephony services and increase national backbone capacity”.

Citing the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) quarterly statistics released last week, Zuku claims to hold 44.7 per cent of the fixed and mobile internet market in Kenya.
