MTN launches LTE for prepaid customers

South Africa’s second operator MTN has launched long term evolution (LTE) SIM cards for its prepaid customers, providing access to the high-speed internet service with a range of data bundles.

MTN said its LTE PayAsYouGo SIM offering will consist of the Standard SIM, Micro SIM and Nano SIM at a cost of ZAR1.50 (US$0.14); while customers can choose between newly launched data bundles ranging from 3 gigabytes (GB) at a cost of ZAR299 (US$28.2) to 20 GB at the price of ZAR1,199 (US$113.2).

“South Africans want world-class internet access that is capable of meeting all their unique connectivity requirements,” said Larry Annetts, chief marketing officer (CMO) for MTN South Africa.

“The new MTN PayAsYouGo LTE SIM cards are available from any MTN branded stores including participating retail outlets. Existing prepaid customers wanting to perform SIM swaps to the new LTE (128k) will also be able to do so,” Annetts said.

Customers wishing to take up MTN’s LTE offering must ensure their mobile device is LTE-capable, and that they are in an LTE coverage area which can be checked via the MTN website.

The operator said over 790 MTN LTE sites are already live across the country, with a further 825 sites still to be integrated with LTE technology.

“MTN has already rolled out LTE networks to parts of Gauteng, the Free State, KwaZulu Natal, and the Western, Central, and Eastern Cape with more sites coming online throughout the year,” said Annetts.

“This roll-out strategy means that MTN customers are always at the forefront of the latest technology that is competitive and relevant for their needs.”
