CNN opts for mobile survey in Africa regarding election of the pope

CNN has commissioned mobile research company Jana to survey African’s thoughts on the possibility of a Pope from the continent.

Jana sampled 20,000 views from 11 countries, with the mobile research said to have been one of the largest CNN has ever carried out on the continent, sampling 20,000 people in just four days.

In the event, an African Pope was not elected, with the wait for the 266th Pope ending on Wednesday when the Vatican unveiled Pope Francis I to take over from Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned last month.

Less than 54 per cent of respondents in Lesotho, Nigeria and Zambia believed the world was ready for an African Pope, while only 40 per cent of respondents in Kenya believe that an African Pope would make the Catholic Church more conservative.

Peter Bale, vice president and general manager for digital of CNN International, said: “Using the Jana platform to reach the booming mobile market in Africa allowed us to engage far more people in more countries than we could have done by other means.”

The Jana platform is used by millions of people around the globe to give their sentiments on various issues and products.
