ICT to improve ferry services in Mombasa

A KSh200 million (US$2.3 million) ICT project will see the improvement of ferry services at the Kenyan coast, boosting security for passengers.

The system also aims to speed up the issuance of tickets by using computers, while heightening surveillance on the ferry crossing. The ferry services handles 200,000 passengers and 3,500 motorists daily.

“It will monitor every moment of all ferry users which is vital for security,” Catherine Getao, e-government ICT secretary, said at the event announcing the commissioning.

Closed circuit television cameras will be installed on the ramps and will be monitored 24 hours daily.

“We already have close circuit televisions on all vessels and on both ramps, but we felt that was not enough.” Musa Hassan Musa, Ferry services managing director, said.

The developments come after the ferry services bought surveillance equipment for KSh12 million (US$140,000) few months ago.
