Uganda’s SIM card registration in final stages

Uganda’s SIM registration exercise is in its final stages after being started more than a year ago.

Speaking to the Daily Monitor Godfrey Mutabazi, executive director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), said the exercise will close at the end of this month.

The UCC is almost done with the compiling and tallying of the data in the SIM card registration process.

“We dispatched teams to various parts of the country to collect data on the exercise which we shall add up this week to get the real picture,” Mutabazi said.

“I cannot tell the exact figures of how many have been added on, but I know it’s above the 80 per cent.”

The UCC had granted service providers a 180 day extension to the earlier deadline so operators could have 90 days for registration and 90 days for verification of the captured data before it started switching off all unregistered SIM Cards.

Mutabazi however warns the commission may not grant extensions of the exercise this time around.

SIM registration in Uganda started in March 2012 and its deadline was originally meant to be February 28, but the exercise hit a snag because of technical glitches.

Telecommunications companies have cited the lack of identity cards as one of the main challenges to registering SIM cards.
