Pule to lose Sentech and Telkom influence

South Africa’s troubled communications minister could be set to lose her say in Sentech, Telkom and the Post Office as the government looks to move power to public enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba.

The Mail & Guardian is reporting Dina Pule, who is currently under investigation by the police over allegations of corruption and by parliament’s ethics committee, will be the biggest loser in the move, which will could take state petroleum company PetroSA move to Gigaba’s office.

Any reshuffle will be the result of the presidential review committee into state-owned enterprises and is expected to be confirmed in an announcement next week.

Pule has faced repeated calls from the opposition, particularly the Democratic Alliance, to resign after a string of alleged misdemeanours involving the influence of her reported boyfriend Phosane Mngqibisa, the mishandling of South Africa’s set-top boxes vital for digital migration and her involvement in sponsorship money regarding last year’s ICT Indaba in Cape Town.

Pule’s Department of Communications currently oversees Sentech and the Post Office and looks after the government’s 40 per cent stake in operator Telkom.
