Microsoft has launched the Xbox One, its new all-in-one gaming console that lets the user be at the centre of their games, television, movies, sports and Skype.

The console, launched in front of  a packed auditorium including the press at the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, has been the subject of rumours in the gaming industry for some time now and is already causing ripples on social media.

The audience at Redmond was first treated to a video conference of teasers on the game console from all over the world, before Microsoft president of interactive entertainment business Don Mattrick took to the podium to unveil the new console.

“Xbox One is designed to deliver a whole new generation of blockbuster games, television and entertainment in a powerful, all-in-one device,” said Mattrick. “Our unique, modern architecture brings simplicity to the living room and, for the first time ever, the ability to instantly switch across your games and entertainment.”

“It is time for technology to step behind the curtain and you and your entertainment to take centre stage.”

Xbox One consists of an operating system fused with an entertainment platform that lets users watch television or play a game without having to switch inputs.

It has more than five billion transistors and an eight-core, x86 processor, making it possible for users to jump from a game to their entertainment at high speed.

The Xbox One will hit markets around the world later this year.
