South African mapping startup mydoorhandle has been selected to attend the Blackbox Connect Summer Programme in California, United States, aiming to gain contacts and experience in the US.

Following 88mph’s nomination for mydoorhandle to apply for BlackBox, the startup received a notification of selection yesterday (Wednesday) to attend the programme in July.

Launched by Easy2Map in April, mydoorhandle offers South Africans an unique mapping solution through address sharing with longitude and magnitude.

Speaking to HumanIPO, founder Steven Ellis said: “It’s amazing we got through.”

Open for collaborations to reach the US market, Ellis aims to take advantage of network opportunities the programme offers to develop higher business value.

“It (Silicon Valley) is the pinnacle of IT infrastructure and networking, venture capital (VC), that kind of blazes the trail and it would be great to see how it operates, how people network, how VC gets raised there, speak to the other entrepreneurs and just get exposed to Silicon Valley,” he said.

Currently on the verge of its roll-out stages, mydoorhandle plans to monetise via providing business application services.

“We’ve got to work it out to make a world class product that people want to use and share,” he said.
