Electronic ticketing a success in Tanzania

The Tanzanian government is considering the use of electronic ticketing systems following the recent success of a similar system with the Magogoni ferry.

Marcellin Magesa, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Services Agency (TEMESA), the installation of the other systems will be done in a systematic way at other crossing points within the country.

In a statement, Magesa also refuted previous claims that the purchase of the new system was shrouded in secrecy and revenue had been dwindling since its installation.

“Procurement of the machine followed all procedures as required by the 2004 procurement laws and regulations, there was no secrecy in procuring the machines because it was coordinated by the TEMESA’s procurement committee and board,” Magesa said.

“Reports by the local newspaper that since the system was installed revenue has gone down are not true. The truth is that revenue collected has increased since the machine was installed and TEMESA is the one operating the ticketing system and not the company that installed the machines.”

She added the contract between TEMESA and the installation company stipulates that the company also provides training in addition to inspecting and monitoring the machines for one year, which began last month.

Special cameras have also been added at the Magogoni ferry to help monitor and follow-up on ticketing.
