HumanIPO reported in February the web giant was in early discussions with record labels about the possibility of a service and the idea was being received well by the industry.
CNNMoney have said a music subscription service will launch as early as this year and already has a “negotiating team and operating unit” in place.
It is understood it will overlap with other features coming to Google’s Android music platform and Google Play.
Similar to Spotify, the coming YouTube platform will be free, but subscribers can pay a fee to unlock extra features including ad-free access.
Although already full of music content, YouTube only makes its money by selling advertising alongside videos, giving a cut back to the record label.
