HumanIPO reported earlier this year on Ubuntu’s tablet release. The desktop friendly release by Canonical is also marked as a pre-entry to the mobile market, arstechnica reported.
June Silber, chief executive officer at Canonical, said: "Over the last year, we've seen a clear shift in major enterprises, telcos and service providers, toward building their public and private cloud offerings on Ubuntu plus OpenStack (OS)."
Founded by South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth, the organisation revealed its plans for mobile presence earlier in 2013 with promises of better graphics.
Planning to switch to Multimedia Information Retrieval (MIR)-operating platform soon, Shuttleworth said: "What MIR does is it gives us kind of unified wrapper around OpenGL drivers from all sorts of different places.”
He added: “MIR will make it easier to run Ubuntu across different types of chips”.
Ubuntu targets the lower memory devices and aims to make a set of tools available for operation on its platform across multiple gadgets.
An adaptable codebase will not only simplify the user experience, but also enhance it with portability and productivity aspects, Canonical believes.
"Performance on lightweight systems was a core focus for this cycle, as a prelude to Ubuntu's release on a range of mobile form factors,” the company said.
“As a result, 13.04 delivers significantly faster response times in casual use, and a reduced memory footprint that benefits all users.”
The latest version, named Raring Ringtale, was released last week as a prelude to Saucy Salamander which will follow later this year.
