The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation’s eighth annual Digital Broadcasting Switchover Forum will debate infrastructure, regulation and content bringing together senior policy makers, broadcasters, providers and other stakeholders.
The entire African continent is committed to switching its analogue signal to digital by June 2015 by the Geneva 06 Agreement with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), but so far Mauritius is the only country in Africa which has completed the migration.
The CTO believes after Mauritius, of the 53 countries that are bound to the agreement on the continent “four seem to be on track, ten are at a pilot stage and just about 29 are still planning the transition.”
HumanIPO reported yesterday (Tuesday) South Africa was no closer to setting itself a realistic target of expansion, while Uganda’s slow take-up of digital migration has been blamed on poor public awareness. In Nigeria a special conference is being held today (Wednesday) and Thursday.
Speakers at the Johannesburg conference, to be held from February 11-13 at the Holiday Inn, Sandton, include Themba Dlamini, Chief Executive of the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (ICASA), Professor Tim Unwin, Secretary General of the CTO, and Trilock Dwarka, Chairman of Information and Communicatgion Technologies Authority of Mauritius.
