The rise in subscribers took place over the festive season and George Barbaressos, Econet’s Commercial Director, confirmed the statistics, saying the demand for Econet services is “very, very strong”.
According to Barbaressos, the driving factor in Econet’s dominance in the telecommunications market in Zimbabwe is largely due to investment. Barbaressos claims Econet invests more money than all of its competitors combined.
Econet’s claim to dominance rings true with eight of 13 million people of Zimbabwe subscribed to its network.
Concerning customer experience and service for the year ahead, Barbaressos said: “We are going to spend significantly on customer service this year. We are going to expand and improve our network of shops, expand our call centres and we are going to train our staff to ensure that the core values of our founder drive the company at all levels.”
Econet has also experienced an increase of EcoCash customers, which have reached the two million mark. EcoCash is a financial service similar to Safaricom’s M-Pesa.
