In an exclusive interview with HumanIPO at the Nigerian Bloggers Fair in Lagos, Opeyemi Awoyemi said he does not see the price coming down soon.
"I see the price coming down but it's not something that is going to necessarily happen in the next one to two years, it might take a while," he said.
While justifying the cost, currently at NGN15,000 (US$95), he noted that, comparing it with the cost of domains such as .tv, .ng is not expensive because of its global potential.
He said: ".tv is for a country called Tivoli, but everyone uses it for 'television'. I think that .ng has that same opportunity too because you can register domain names such as bloggi.ng, anything in the continuous tense.
“So as such it's to be an important domain name not only in Nigeria, but to people in other parts of the world."
He however stated that, over time, the cost would be reconsidered.
"The price cannot go down anytime soon, but over time we are going to think about bringing the price down," he said.
HumanIPO interviewed Ope Odusan, chief operating officer at NiRA earlier this month and discussed cost as well as what .ng will mean for Nigeria.
