Mobile sales decreased by 3.6 per cent in the EMEA region, though it fared better than North and Latin America which experienced a 9.7 per cent decline.
With a seven per cent overall increase since 2012, the Asian/Pacific region generated the highest sale measures with 226 million sales, with a 53 per cent boost to universal sales.
Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: “The Chinese and local manufacturers have been exemplary at addressing the demands of buyers by offering affordable devices with optimum features such as 2.5G (EDGE) instead of 3G in a smartphone.”
Among vendors, Samsung topped the charts with more than 100,657 sales, ahead of Nokia and Apple in second and third place.
Android exceeded all operation-based sales with 156,186 units, followed by iOS and BlackBerry.
