Launching MNP, Nigeria’s minister of communication technology, Omobola Johnson, described it as a welcome development that will give mobile subscribers in Nigeria the freedom to change their network providers that offer unsatisfactory quality of service.
“Mobile Number Portability will bring a new dimension to the competition in the industry as network operators will have to work harder to earn the trust of subscribers because the commencement of mobile number portability means that subscribers now have a choice and can drop any operator that does not meet their expectations,” Johnson said.
The MNP launch had suffered a series of setbacks, which were in the main blamed on the major network operators not being ready to participate.
HumanIPO confirmed yesterday morning the latest attempt at the launch would go ahead as planned.
The minister described MNP as a long awaited scheme that will return power to mobile telecommunications users in Nigeria.
She added it would compel the telecoms companies to improve upon their service quality.
