It is estimated Kenya alone produces 17,500 tonnes of e-waste in the form of televisions, refrigerators, old computers, mobile phones and other electronic equipment.
The improper disposal of the electronic waste has led to the rise of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and contributed significantly to environmental degradation.
HumanIPO reported last month the Green Hand Organisation (GHO) had filed a petition to Kenya’s High Court in a bid to halt President Uhuru Kenyatta’s flagship policy of delivering one laptop to every child in primary school, claiming the laptops will do more harm than good to the environment and will put the country’s environmental health at risk.
Those present at the launch will include Nzioka Waita, corporate affairs director at Safaricom, Gideon Mbuvi, Nairobi senator and Peris Nkonge, finance director at the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).
