“MTN, Ghana’s most reliable voice and data network has a variety of services tailored to suit your specific needs...” reads the homepage of the MTN Ghana’s website.
However, the MTN Group has been ordered by the Ghanaian National Communications Authority (NCA) to stop selling SIM cards in the country because they have found MTN’s network quality falls short of reliability.
“NCA has engaged Scancom Ltd, on several occasions, on the issues of quality of service degredation,” said the NCA on it’s website in a statement issued by the Director General, Paarock Vanpercy. The Accra-based agency added “in spite of these engagements, network performance on MTN continues to deteriorate.”
“Consequently, the NCA has directed Scancom Ltd to, with immediate effect, cease selling and/or adding any new sim cards/subscribers to MTN network until further notice.”
This is not the first time MTN has come under fire in Ghana. HumanIPO reported on September 28 a Ghanaian court ordered the arrest of CEO Michael Ikpoki, customer relations officer Jemima Kotei and technical officer John Joffman for not appearing in court three times.
MTN, which took over Scancom in 2007, claims to have reached 11 million subscribers out of the 25 million of Ghana’s total population in September this year. This translates to MTN being Ghana’s largest mobile-phone network operator.
