It was on January 1, 1983, that the United States Department of Defence switched its Arpanet network to the Internet protocol suite (IPS) communication system.
Work on IPS began in 1973 and was designed to replace the Network Control Program.
It ultimately paved the way for Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web which arrived in 1989 and is now used to connect billions of people across the world, transforming lives and business.
