As the world celebrated the beginning of 2013 on Monday night and Tuesday morning another little-known, but hugely important, anniversary was beginning at the same time.
It was on January 1, 1983, that the United States Department of Defence switched its Arpanet network to the Internet protocol suite (IPS) communication system.
Work on IPS began in 1973 and was designed to replace the Network Control Program.
It ultimately paved the way for Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web which arrived in 1989 and is now used to connect billions of people across the world, transforming lives and business.
