The Wall Street Journal reports Facebook is currently testing the use of the hashtag symbol, but it is not likely to be implemented anytime soon.
The hashtag is used by Tweeters to indicate and collate tweets written on the same topic.
Examples of popular hashtagged topics in South Africa include the #SONA - the State of the Nation Address - and #Ramphele, which was trending at number one on South African Twitter last month when Mamphela Ramphele, activist and politician, launched her party political platform.
The Wall Street Journal reported Twitter users had come up with the hashtag idea more than five years ago.
According to the report, unnamed sources said Facebook is intending to implement the hashtag service for the same reason Twitter did - to allow users to organise posts and comments according to topic.
