Gambia gets new social network site

Share Tweet

http://visualrevenue.com

Gambian social network looks to rival Facebook as the race begins to sign up users.

New social networking site Wegambians has been launched by Ebou Njie, a specialist in information technology and a Texas-based DJ. The site has been widely described as superbly creativity and innovative giving Gambians at home and abroad an alternative platform to network and socialize on.

Njie said the website is in its development phase, and has around 1,000 subscribers.

"Wegambians is more like a niche social networking site. It aims to bring together Gambians in different parts of the world and from all walks of life. Companies can advertise on the site, which also provides opportunities for organisations, youth groups and charities to reach out to their members and attract potential members. There is a business directory where members can add local and international businesses," the innovator said.

Joining the site is free, only requiring a username and password. He added: "It has similar functions like Facebook; you can add pictures, share what is on your mind and
search for friends or old school mates.”

While comparing the website with other similar social networking sites such as Facebook,
Myspace and hi5, Njie said unlike others that are made for global users, Wegambians is
exclusively meant for Gambians.

As the number of users on the website increases, he said businesses will be able to connect to their target populations via the website.
