The San Francisco-based social networking site tweeted: “There are now more than 200M monthly active@twitter users. You are the pulse of the planet. We’re grateful for your ongoing support!”
In March, when it turned six years old, Twitter was at 140 million users who had sent more than 340 million tweets a day. To reach 200 million users, approximately 6.6 million users have joined Twitter per month since March.
At the above rate, it will take Twitter about 15 years to reach Facebook’s alleged one billion user mark. Twitter’s success is attributed to government organisations, celebrities, brands and an ever increasing number of new subscribers signing up.
As HumanIPO reported on Wednesday, December 12, Pope Benedict XVI joined Twitter and had accumulated 755,472 followers at the time. In just one week, the Pope now has 1,232,892 followers (at the time of writing).
Twitter users who have been registered for a few years already will be able to download all their tweets, allowing users to host their own local backup of Twitter posts. This new feature will be available after Twitter has finished testing the feature.
