The process of eliminating false wiring products is expected to substantially lower the number of fire-related incidents in the West African region, reported Telecomspaper.
The rise in commercial, residential and industrial fire incidents are the result of a large incursion of false and substandard cable wiring in the region, according to experts. Major shopping clusters, homes and a number of warehouses have been destroyed by fires as a result of electrical causes.
An impending advocacy effort together with a customer authentication programme forms part of Tigo and Tropical Cable’s plan to promote quality wiring and cables usage in West Africa.
This will be implemented through a free SMS service for customers purchasing Tropical’s quality cable brands. The customers will be able to SMS a short code, which will then instantly validate the purchased products.
Tigo said it is hoping to implement this as well as similar authentication programs throughout its markets operating in seven African countries over the course of two years. Tigo has as many as 31 million subscribers.
