Hadfield created the award winning Real Time Wine, an application which gives wine drinkers a platform to rate, suggest and otherwise comment on wines the users purchase.
The MyBeer app was created on the same platform as Real Time Wine.
Within the MyBeer app’s first week more than 1,000 people logged in and have written more than 250 reviews of 156 beers from 56 different breweries around South Africa.
The ratings are catagorised as such: “Yum” - being good, “hmm” being moderate and “yuk” being bad.
Speaking to HumanIPO, Hadfield said: “We’re extremely excited to be working with SAB (South African Breweries). Beer is a vertical we believe can have as much, if not more, engagement than wine. Both mainstream beer and craft beer are going through some really interesting changes."
“It was less than a year ago that we started hearing about beer and food pairings. Now they’re all over the place. MyBeer is there to trap that trend and help the consumers discover and share these beer experiences.”
Martin Brooks, SAB’s chief brewer, said: “MyBeer, the new online beer community, was commissioned by the SAB to encourage beer lovers to share their beer drinking experiences with each other. MyBeer is educational, fun and a valuable resource for old and new beer drinkers alike.”
As well as reviewing and rating “South Africa’s best beers”, users are able to see the 10 top trending beers. Reviews can also be shared on Facebook and Twitter.
Users are also able to work their way “up the ranks of beer tasters, from a Shandy Sipper to a Bru’ski, Hop Head, Smooth Hoperator to the heights of a Yeast Whisperer”.
Climbing the beer tasting ranks are achieved through the number of reviews a user writes. A high ranking will result in users being invited to special events and granted access to competitions.
Here is what two of the users had to say about the beers they have tasted recently: “Layers of flavours, caramel and toffee through to molasses and burning pirate ships at the back of your tongue,” this review was written on Brew Dog’s 5am Saint red ale.
“Absense makes the dark grow fonder, glad to be back. Tangier than other stouts, bitter from roasting but slightly sweet undertone. Love it!” This review praises the SAB’s Castle Milk Stout.
The MyBeer app is available to download for free or connect with@MyBeerSA on Twitter.
