AFP reports construction of the “Google Airport” is to begin later this year, though Mineta said it was not true to suggest the search giant was moving into aviation.
"It is a significant private development and Google is the main tenant, but it is not their airport," Mineta spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes told AFP.
The airport is 19 kilometres from Google’s headquarters in the city of Mountain View, with US firm Signature Flight Support set to build the executive terminal, which will feature seven hangars, five of which will be reserved for Google.
Google joins Hewlett-Packard, which has had a private terminal at the same airport for almost 30 years, Barnes said.
"We've seen great demand in Silicon Valley from companies wanting to house aircraft," Barnes told AFP.
The new terminal is due for completion in mid-2015.
