HumanIPO reported on Friday various regions were being affected by the downtime, with a Telkom spokesman saying they were still trying to ascertain where the problems were coming from.
But on Saturday the part state-owned telecommunications company said it was a result of “planned maintenance work” as it looked to add new IP addresses to their network.
It added: “Unfortunately a problem occurred immediately after commencing the planned maintenance and this resulted in all live ADSL sessions being ‘reset’; commencing approximately 15h49.”
The company said normally when customers reset their network’s when suffering problems, it will take an average of two minutes, but because of the high volume of resets taking place at the same time it exasperated the situation and extended the downtime.
Telkom said most services were back online by 17.30 on Friday afternoon, but an “in-depth investigation” was now taking place.
