The process to be launched today by education minister Mutula Kilonzo will reveal successful candidates to join form one in various secondary schools, an exercise that is expected to lock out nearly 205,000 students.
Of the successful students, nearly 10,280 who topped last year’s exam will join national schools, while county schools will enroll up to 138,480 students.
District schools will take in around 358,040 students.
In the national school category, nearly 5,400 boys will get positions compared to 4,890 girls, while in county schools -- formerly provincial schools -- about 75,430 boys will be enrolled compared to 63,050 girls.
The use of technology to transmit the results of the form one selection will come as a relief to many students, as, unlike KCPE results, selection results are known to take much longer.
The results will however, unlike the KCPE results, be released at intervals, starting with national schools, followed by county schools and lastly district schools.
The places in national schools are expected to see increased competition with some 5,810 candidates who sat for the exam having scored more than 400 out of 500 marks compared to 4,200 students in the previous year, an increase of more than 1,600 students.
However, with the elevation of 30 provincial schools to the national school category, total absorption is expected into national schools with the fairly performed students being relegated to the county schools.
