To this effect, the company has also announced the Tecno Developer Challenge.
Speaking at an event organised by Co-Creation Hub, the deputy general manager of Tecno Nigeria, Chidi Okonkwo, described the contest as an opportunity for Nigerian app developers to create great apps for Tecno mobile users.
He said: “Nigeria does about 50 per cent of Tecno's African market. As at the end of year 2012, Tecno Nigeria has sold about 12 million units of phones in Nigeria. This is a great leap from 335,000 units sold in 2008 when Tecno first ventured into the African market.
“Tecno has 20.4 per cent market share, coming second after Nokia which holds about 42.7 per cent share at number one.”
He said the mobile application challenge is open to citizens of Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia.
“It is expected to run through the year, and the winners announced in the last quarter of 2013,” he said.
Tunji Elesho, the pre-Incubation and research lead at the Co-Creation Hub, said the Tecno Developer Challenge is for those passionate about app development.
“This application challenge, channelled towards people interested in building software applications, is like none other,” Elesho said.
Within six years of its establishment, Tecno Telecom Limited has spread from Hong Kong to 17 African markets after making its debut on the continent’s IT scene in 2008.
