Archie Hesse, chief executive officer (CEO) of GhIPSS, spoke yesterday (Wednesday) at the National Payments Strategy Workshop in Accra.
He explained the GhIPSS, a subsidiary of Ghana Bank, has noticed the need for a mobile payment solution earlier, although telecoms have taken the first step to provide these services.
Currently MTN and Tigo are the only operators to provide mobile money payment options in the country.
“What we will do now, is to interconnect the mobile money companies such that if you are with MTN but also to Tigo to withdraw your funds,” Hesse said, as reported by Ghana News Agency.
However, the initiative is to still be discussed with the telecoms.
According to a Visa Inc. study, 93 per cent of Ghanaians have knowledge of mobile money.
Hosted by the Bank of Ghana, the workshop was aimed at industry players to converse about the development of payment systems in Ghana.
Possible solutions, challenges and opportunities for progress were topics of discussion.
