Smartphones using the open source Ubuntu operating system will be available from October, with developers offered access to the operating system by the end of this month.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder and CEO of Canonical Ltd, told the Wall Street Journal that Linux-based Ubuntu will be available on a full range of devices and could provide corporate IT executives with opportunities to reduce device numbers.
The Ubuntu smartphones will have Windows-based application streamed to them from corporate servers, meaning users can access data through a single device. The phones can also be docked to larger displays or connected to keyboards.
“You can share Windows apps to the phone desktop,” Shuttleworth said during a meeting in New York on Tuesday, February 5.
