The Financial Times had reported Huawei was planning a takeover bid, but Reuters reported the contrary yesterday.
Richard Yu, Huawei’s head of consumer business, reportedly told the Financial Times: “We are considering these sorts of acquisitions; maybe the combination has some synergies, but depends on the willingness of Nokia. We are open-minded.”
Africa is one of the few markets where Nokia still holds a considerable presense, while Huawei are also making a consistent effort on the continent.
Reuters reported however Huawei had told them it “has no plans to acquire Nokia”.
Nokia has not commented.
