According to the Daily Trust, the sum was paid by the telecommunication companies between June 2012 and March this year for offences which included fines for promotions and lotteries and low quality of services.
The bulk of the fines were paid in June last year, when MTN, Etisalat, Globacom and Airtel collectively paid NGN1.12 billion (US$6.9 million) for bad services. In February a further NGN22 million fine was imposed for ignoring a ban on promotions and lotteries.
MTN were fined a further NGN90 million (US$570,000) in March for not meeting the NCC’s key performance indicators (KPI).
