Ghanaian network operators penalised

Five mobile operators have been fined a collective GHS900,000 (US$455,000) for violating quality of service (QoS) standards in Ghana in the first quarter of 2013.

Call congestion, call setup time and signalling congestion were among the offences the National Communications Authority (NCA) found MTN, Glo, Expresso, Airtel and tiGO guilty of.

MTN and Glo each received fines of GHS300,000 (US$152,000), while the other three were penalised to the tune of GHS100,000 (US$51,000), reported the Business and Financial Times.

Vodafone meanwhile were found to be in compliance with all of the NCA’s requirements.

Previously the operators have blamed poor service on poor infrastructure, fibre cuts and fuel theft.

In March, the number of mobile subscribers in Ghana reached 26.4 million, an increase of 1.3 per cent on the March 2012 figure.

MTN is the most popular network with more than 12 million customers, while Vodafone is second with 5.6 million.
