Apple patents triple sensor camera

Apple has received a camera technology related patent that uses three separate sensors by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

According to AppleInsider, the three different sensors will have various functions including luminance, chrominance, generating images and improving colour capture accuracy.

The patent further says: “The image sensing device may further include an image processing module for combining the luminance image captured by the first image sensor, the first chrominance image captured by the second image sensor, and the second chrominance image captured by the third image sensor, to form a composite image.”

The three sensor patent number8,497,897 can be applied to portable devices such as smartphones.

To experts, the main weight of the patent is the technology that combines three images created by one sensor disposed between two chrominance sensors.

The patent was applied for on August 17, 2010, and credits David S. Gere as being behind  the idea with the company saying that such a camera could be built in future on the iPhone.
