E1M reveals ONE petition results

African mobile specialist Every1Mobile (E1M) has released results of the ONE campaign, following the partnership with ONE.org.

E1M and ONE have collaborated to launch the ONE petition, aimed at African leaders to open their budgets and keep to their commitments on health funding.

The petition will contribute on an essential level for the prevention of treatable diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis (TB).

Focused on engagement with people between 15 and 35, E1M launched the campaign on its network of nine mobile communities.

More than 10,000 digital signatures were gained within the first five days of the petition from participants in 14 African countries.

People from South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Somalia, Mozambique, Botswana, Sudan,  Ivory Coast, Kenya and Ghana made contributions.

David Cole, international digital director at ONE, said: “We are calling on African governments to open up their budgets and save lives.”

He added: “Our petition shows that, across the continent, these are issues that really matter.”

ONE’s partnership with E1M has enabled the company to gather 10,000 “voices” across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The campaign was launched within 24 hours of the partnership and results were tracked in real time.

Isabelle Amazon-Brown, head of community development at E1M, said: “It can be the case that campaigns such as this one involuntarily overlook the very people they are advocating for, and E1M intends to continue making sure the voices of African youth are heard loud and clear.”

The involvement of young people is viewed as a particular asset.

One respondent said: “We can overcome everything if we work together…it is in our hands to be co-workers with the government and make this a success.”
