Currently the world’s lowest smartphone owners, Africans need five years to catch up to become a major stakeholder, a recent report has forecasted.

Smartphone penetration in Africa varies between three per cent and 17 per cent among countries across the continent, The Royce Funds study has revealed.

The statistics translates to Africa being a decade behind, compared to global markets.

However, taking into account Africa’s economic growth, the investment group estimates the continent could become a major role player by 2018.

Smartphone growth will also spur on the expansion of other industries, such as the mobile gambling industry.

Online poker has driven mobile device sales, as Latestcasinonews.net confirmed in its July report.

“Most of the leading operators in the world rely on mobile gaming for almost half of their revenue,” the report stated.

As smartphone market growth in Europe and Asia has followed this pattern, Africa is now deemed the next in line for similar accomplishment.
