Digital migration has the potential to boost the levels of internet and broadband penetration in Nigeria, according to Emeka Mba, director general of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
Mba also announced the corporation would officially begin to accept bids from digital signal distributors as the country prepares to meet the June 2015 digital migration deadline set by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
Mba added that the NBC will soon commence the assessment of media houses to ascertain their level of preparedness for the digital migration, which he said will affect more than 40 million Nigerian households which will need set-top boxes in order to watch digital television when the migration is officially effected.
He also revealed the preparedness of the Nigerian government to provide subsidies to lower the cost of the required equipment.
