African SMEs, startups increasingly adopting automated HR solutions

African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups are increasingly automating human resources (HR) and payroll solutions to improve productivity, streamline processes and promote sharing of information.

Some of the programmes include cloud, mobility and social tools, with Gerhard Hartman, head of department at Sage HR Africa, saying HR departments are the biggest spenders on technology in African enterprises because they are looking for ways to automate HR and payroll processes.

Hartman said today’s HR department faces a range of complex issues such as talent development, performance management and growing regulatory and legislative requirements meaning solutions are needed for accurate, real-time information for the purposes of statutory reporting and strategic decision-making.

“There’s a lot of routine admin in HR – automating as much of that as possible can save the organisation time and money,” he said.

“We are seeing many African startups and small businesses look at implementing payroll and HR solutions for the first time.”

One of the many trends in the market sees HR directors look towards cloud-based solutions which help them eliminate the need to for investing in their own infrastructure, software enhancements and updates or backing up data.
