Hellocomputer and Draftfcb 2013 hackathon dates announced

Hellocomputer and Draftcb are planning to hold their second hackathon at their office in Katherine Street, Sandton, Johannesburg on May 9.

Teams that apply to participate will be briefed on the day and given 48 hours to hack. The results will be presented to a panel of judges.

The 48 hour event is described as “caffeine fuelled” with teams comprised of “sharp tech minds” and “top-shelf creatives”.

“Hackathons involve bending, forcing or breaking old conventions to create something new and innovative out of the chaos,” said the two companies in a statement.

Hellocomputer and Draftfcb sponsored an inaugural hack-a-thon last year, which saw the creation of an equaliser made of slinkys, a tweeting hamster and a “quadrocopter” controlled by an iPhone.

Mark Tomlinson, Hellocomputer’s executive creative director, said the digital agency is excited for round two.

“The first hackathon we held was an awe-inspiring event resulting in incredible innovation, but there are definitely things we’ll be doing a little differently this time round,” said Tomlinson.

Tomlinson added: “We have a specific brief and theme, which we must keep under wraps, which we think will make for a whole lot of fun for both contestants and judges.

“Hackathon is an open event; we want everyone to experience it. Anyone is welcome to pull through, spectate or submit a tem if they’re up for the challenge.”
